Head of Government and Gaza

In the Saturday edition of your publication, there was an extensive interview with Prime Minister Simon Harris, and shockingly, his view on the ongoing disaster in Gaza occupied just a single line. He expressed criticism towards the EU’s approach without any proposition for Ireland’s independent action against Israel. It’s rather unfortunate that Mr. Harris’s specific remarks were not detailed, as understanding his perplexing stance is undoubtedly of public value.

The situation in Gaza is bleak, with the death toll exceeding 40,000 and Israel facing no consequences, suggesting the massacre may continue for an undefined period, potentially leading to the complete obliteration of Gaza as a habitable place. The question arises, will Ireland simply watch as this occurs; vaguely citing EU trade policies?

Harsh criticism hasn’t provoked any desirable changes in Binyamin Netanyahu’s far-right government. It appears Israel will only revise its conduct if confronted by considerable political, financial and economic sanctions. It’s high time someone took the mantle, and frankly, Mr. Harris’s dismissal of deliberate action by Ireland is not acceptable.

In the meantime, Netanyahu cunningly diverts global focus from numerous other warmongers. Blink-182 entertained Dublin with their typical collection of popular music and humour, while a recent opinion piece suggested that although Northern Ireland is predominantly Nationalist, reunification may not happen in the near future. The decision to leave Australia and return to Ireland was the best choice for one individual. – Yours faithfully,
