Hazel Chu Selected for Dublin Bay South

Ex-Lord Mayor of Dublin, Hazel Chu, has been chosen by the Green Party to run in the forthcoming general election. She’s aiming to keep hold of the Dublin Bay South seat, presently occupied by Eamon Ryan. On Monday, the party confirmed her candidacy along with 10 others from a variety of constituencies around the country, preparing for the general election.

Recently, Eamon Ryan declared his plan to step down as the leader of the Green Party and revealed that he will not run in the next election. Last week, his position as the party leader was taken over by the Minister for Children, Roderic O’Gorman.

Ms Chu triumphed as the Green Party’s candidate for Dublin Bay South, beating fellow party members Claire Byrne and Carolyn Moore to the nomination. Expressing her gratitude towards the competitors and her predecessor, she acknowledged that she felt privileged to have been selected.

Regarding her likelihood of retaining the seat, she emphasised that Dublin Bay South has a history of favouring Green Party candidates. She also noted that the voters in the constituency are acutely aware of the climate crisis. Citing the party’s impressive local elections results, she stated that they could only do their best and run a robust campaign focused on positivity.

The Green Party also announced the candidature of current TDs Brian Leddin, Marc Ó Cathasaigh, Patrick Costello, as well as Ministers Catherine Martin and Malcolm Noonan, and Minister of State Joe O’Brien. Other candidates selected include Francis Noel Duffy and Steven Matthews.

Senators Pauline O’Reilly and Vincent P Martin were chosen to run for the election representing Galway West and Kildare North respectively.
