The first high-profile line-up announced for the Glastonbury Festival 2024 features the acclaimed singer Dua Lipa, the country-pop sensation Shania Twain, rock group Coldplay, and the American vocalist SZA. Twain, the Canadian songstress renowned for chart-toppers such as Man I Feel Like A Woman, You’re Still The One, and That Don’t Impress Me Much, will take to the Pyramid stage at the much-celebrated Worthy Farm festival in Somerset, taking place from the 26th to the 30th of June.
The five-time Grammy award winner, with over 100 million record sales to her name, is regarded as one of the most successful artists in the music industry. Emily Eavis, the festival’s co-organiser, had previously teased the booking of a major female artist to fill the revered Sunday afternoon legends’ slot.
Coldplay, a band fondly regarded by Glastonbury founder Michael Eavis, continue their enduring association with the festival. Eavis even once remarked that they were welcome to come for milking duties at Worthy Farm anytime. The band will make history, becoming the first group to grace the Pyramid stage as a headliner five times. Their impressive journey to pop-rock stardom began with their first headline performance in 2002, with only a single album under their belt. Coldplay have since returned to headline in 2005, 2011, and 2016, and even put on a live-streamed performance to an empty Pyramid field in lieu of the cancelled 2021 festival due to Covid-19 concerns.
Their 2024 show will mark a European festival exclusive, as part of their Music of the Spheres world tour, which kicked off in March 2022. This tour is already placed as the third-largest earning tour of all time, trailing behind only Taylor Swift and Elton John.
Dua Lipa’s scheduled performance was announced a day following the launch of her third album, Radical Optimism, propelled by the global popularity of singles Houdini and Training Season. Lipa mentioned that the album’s theme revolves around tackling chaos with elegance and resilience, which hints at possibly braving the capricious weather at Glastonbury. Influenced by musical genres like psychedelia, trip-hop, and Britpop, the album is off to a promising start.
In 2017, a performance on the John Peel stage (at present known as Woodsies) at Glastonbury created a breakthrough moment for a particular artiste. It was a spectacle to behold as fans overflowed from the sides of the tent despite the precipitation. Her booking, an uncommon dance-pop Pyramid headliner move, extends Glastonbury’s ongoing support for pop with personalities such as Beyoncé, Adele, Billie Eilish, and Elton John.
Making her debut at Glastonbury, versatile R&B vocalist SZA secures the coveted status of a Pyramid headliner, further exemplifying her phenomenal ascent. Her 2022 album, SOS, an extraordinary, detailed narration of emotional relationship distress, became an instant R&B hit. It brought home three Grammys and secured nominations for best song, record, and album of the year. SOS secured the top position in US charts and second in the UK.
Shania Twain, another celebrated artist, adds sparkle to the Sunday afternoon show. She will be performing in the ‘legend’ spot, previously graced by Diana Ross, Kylie Minogue, and country music’s icon Dolly Parton. Twain recently performed on a well-received UK arena tour, garnering praises for her exceptional performance lasting two hours, involving eccentric cowboy shenanigans and shows of supreme self-confidence.
Additional performers on the Pyramid stage include Little Simz as an act before Coldplay, followed by LCD Soundsystem, Burna Boy, PJ Harvey, Cyndi Lauper, Janelle Monáe, and Michael Kiwanuka. The thirteen-member boyband Seventeen will be the first K-pop group to take the Pyramid stage.
Idles, following their recent chart-dominating album Tangk, will headline the Other stage, the second largest, alongside Disclosure and the National. Representing UK rap are D-Block Europe, who recently bagged four nights at London’s O2 Arena, plus Headie One and the Streets. Other performers include bands like the Last Dinner Party, Two Door Cinema Club, and an array of pop acts including Camila Cabello, Anne-Marie and Avril Lavigne.
The Glastonbury 2024 line-up has officially been declared after months of speculation, successfully putting rumours about Madonna and Bruce Springsteen’s appearance to rest. The announcement comes a tad later than expected and the organisers have promised to reveal more names in the subsequent weeks.
Leading the bands on the Pyramid stage are performers like Dua Lipa, Coldplay, SZA, among others. Some more notable names to look out for include Shania Twain, LCD Soundsystem, Little Simz, Burna Boy, and PJ Harvey. The crowd will also be enthralled by impressive performances by The National, Idles, and D-Block Europe among other acts on The Other Stage.
Winner of the prestigious Brit Award for Best Group, Jungle, takes center stage at the West Holts, along with Justice and Jessie Ware. Glastonbury regulars Orbital precede London Grammar, Fontaines DC, and Peggy Gou on the Park stage.
Looking at the Woodsies stage, it will feature some of the finest talents like James Blake, Jamie xx, and Gossip. Speculation is rife about surprise sets, and the anticipation peaks as there are detectable gaps in the touring schedules of iconic groups like the Killers and Kings of Leon.
With this spectacular line-up, Glastonbury 2024 is geared up to provide a musical feast to all its attendees.
