A young girl, who fell into the sea near the east pier of Dún Laoghaire on Saturday evening, is currently recuperating from her injuries. The child was saved from the choppy waters off the southern seashore of Dublin by a combined rescue effort that involved the Coast Guard, RNLI, and gardaí.
The event took place close to 8.20 pm, and despite bystanders attempting to assist, the harsh weather conditions hindered their efforts. A member of the RNLI inshore rib was able to come to her rescue, braving the sea to pull her to safety.
Following the incident, she was swiftly carried to a nearby hospital where she is recovering from injuries deemed not critical.
As reported by the gardaí: “We supported other services in rescuing a young girl who had fallen into the sea at Dún Laoghaire harbour over the weekend. She was successfully retrieved from the water by the rescuers and taken to a South Dublin hospital to recover from her non-life-threatening injuries.”
It remains uncertain as to how the child ended up in the water. However, testimonies suggest high swells and gusty weather plagued the shoreline that Saturday. The portion of the pier from which she was saved was reportedly slippery and blanketed with seaweed, making it unsafe to traverse.
Dún Laoghaire Coast Guard, the RNLI, Irish Coast Guard Air and Sea Rescue helicopter 116, Gardai, Dublin Fire Brigade, and the National Ambulance Service were all present at the scene.
In a statement which appeared on X, previously labelled as Twitter, Dún Laoghaire Coast Guard issued the following message: “Child retrieved and taken to hospital. Treat the water with due respect and pay attention to warnings.”
