“Geographical Studies in the Passageways”

The experience of Laura Kennedy in purchasing Irish foodstuff while in Australia was recently brought to my attention, in particular, her possession of 19 Tayto bags spurred by patriotism (“I bought 19 bags of Tayto as an act of patriotism”, Life, 31st July) . She sources her Tayto crisps and other Irish favourites from the UK section in her neighbourhood store. Interestingly, the situation is different in the major supermarket I patronise in Edinburgh. Here, Tayto, along with Barry’s tea among others, can be found in the “Eastern European and Asian” aisle – although, it should be noted that these are the Northern variant of Tayto.
