Gavin Molloy, who is a defender for Shelbourne, has transferred to Aberdeen

Shelbourne Football Club encountered a setback in their prospects for the League of Ireland Premier Division title when it was announced on July 1st that key defender, Gavin Molloy, was signed by Aberdeen for an unidentified sum. The 22-year-old, a grandson to Theo Dunne, a past captain, had showcased impressive performances during the current season, putting up a stellar performance in his final appearance against Waterford on Thursday.

Despite the club’s strong desire to keep Molloy at Tolka Park, the young defender chose to advance his career in Scotland. Opening up about his departure, Molloy expressed his heartfelt sentiments, “It’s not easy to part ways; I’ve had the best years of my life here. I’ve received a lot of love from the fans, enjoyed every moment of my time at Tolka, and my game has really grown.”

Acknowledging that he’ll miss playing in Europe, he shared his excitement about the prospect of playing in Scotland. He further expressed that his time with Shels, considering his family’s passion for the club and his grandfather’s history with it, was indeed special. Expressing certainty of his return as a supporter, Molloy iterated his deep connection with the club.

As Molloy departs, his contribution to the team is fondly recalled by the manager, Damien Duff. He praised the outgoing defender as a fantastic young man and a top-notch player, adding that though his departure saddens everyone, it’s just the way things are in football right now.

Duff remained positive, mentioning how the club has always adapted to changes, like when players Tony Sheridan, Jack Moylan, and Wes Hoolahan left. He hinted at incoming player signings and asserted the club’s ability to move forward. At present, Shelbourne is leading Derry City by two points with an advantage of an unplayed match.
