Gardaí Probe Limerick Explosive Find

An ongoing investigation has been launched by the Gardaí following the unearthing of an explosive device, believed to be grenade-like, in the residential area of Pike Avenue, Garryowen, within Limerick City.

Following the find, a safety perimeter was enacted by the Gardaí, and the army’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team was brought in to assess the suspicious unit. The Defence Forces spokesperson verified that their bomb disposal experts were called upon by An Garda Síochána to inspect this suspicious explosive device discovered within the city of Limerick.

Residents of the impacted area were ensured safety and protection with the enforcement of a secure cordon. Post inspection, the EOD squad determined the device to be harmless and subsequently transferred its custody to AGS (A Garda Siochana) for a deeper probe. The Defence Forces have now ceased their operations and the location has been deemed safe for the public

The army spokesperson also issued a stern reminder to avoid any photographs or images that could reveal the identity of any EOD team members, for reasons relating to their safety and operational security.

The Gardaí have yet to provide a comment on this matter. Further updates to come.
