In a tragic event that occurred on St. Patrick’s Day in County Louth, a pedestrian was fatally hit in a hit-and-run incident. Subsequent to his arrest, a representative from An Garda Síochána is being interrogated in connection to the incident. The authorities in Drogheda are urging anyone who witnessed the incident that took place after 2:30 am on Rathmullen Road to cooperate and provide details.
A pedestrian, discovered unresponsive at the scene, turned out to be Niall McEneaney, a local man in his 40s and previous Louth hurler. Unfortunately, he was pronounced deceased on the scene. The vehicle, which was implicated in the incident, failed to stay at the scene.
In the process of the investigation, a vehicle that aroused the investigators’ interest was found and processed for technical and forensic examination by the Gardaí. Collision investigators also thoroughly inspected the scene for additional evidence. The Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission, or GSOC, declared on Wednesday that the incident has been referred to them by a Garda Superintendent. GSOC is in charge of examining any allegations against Garda members, be they of criminal or disciplinary nature.
“On the 17th of March, we were referred to this matter, which is now under investigation according to section 98 of the Garda Síochána Act of 2005”, GSOC announced. Following the investigation, an arrest was made and the suspect was interviewed. With the investigation still in progress, GSOC is refraining from further comments.
St Fechin’s Hurling Club in Termonfeckin, County Louth, Mr McEneaney’s home club, expressed their deep sorrow over his sudden loss, praising his significant contribution to the club and the sport at large. “Niall’s great passion for hurling was infectious. He was an inspirational figure always committed to high standards on and off the field. We are utterly devastated at his untimely death, he is irreplaceable. Yet his remarkable legacy will endure counting him amongst our many legends,” the club statement read.
