“Galway Firm’s Tri-Peak Climb for MS Mum”

A team of employees from VorTech Water Solutions, a Galway-based company, scaled the heights of Slieve Donard, Croagh Patrick and Carrauntoohil within a day to secure funds for the stem cell treatment of a Dublin woman suffering from progressive primary multiple sclerosis (PPMS).

The company’s endeavour, organised by Peter Leonard, was a remarkable success in spite of challenging weather conditions. A twenty-member strong crew completed the three peaks challenge, which spans Kerry, Mayo and Down counties, in just over twenty-three hours, with part of the journey undertaken during the night.

Sarah Irvine, a 46-year-old mother of two, was diagnosed with a progressive type of MS in 2019. An outdoor enthusiast with a love for sea swimming, her life was drastically affected by the MS diagnosis. Initially, after several falls during a run, she suspected an issue with her ears. However, medical consultations revealed MRI results showing brain and spinal lesions indicative of multiple sclerosis.

The only treatment likely to prevent her from becoming wheelchair-bound is stem cell therapy, with a demonstrated efficacy rate of 70 to 80 per cent in halting the progression of her MS. While it is not a cure as such, stem cell therapy can halt the disease, providing her with a new immune system.

Gareth, Sarah’s husband, hopes that following the treatment, Sarah will one day be healthy enough to walk their daughters, Alice and Juliette, down the aisle at their future weddings. He expressed gratitude for the ongoing support they’ve received, terming it as deeply moving.

Sarah has obtained approval for the stem cell therapy at London’s Guys Hospital. Unfortunately, neither the State nor her medical insurers cover the cost. Nevertheless, the VorTech Water Solutions crew is committed to raising the remaining €80,000 needed for her to hit her goal. Sarah will begin her treatment next month, involving chemotherapy to eradicate her existing immune system before rebuilding it through stem cell therapy.

VorTech’s Chief Executive Officer, Seán Mulligan, communicated that the difficulties they encounter are insignificant compared to the trials that individuals with progressive Multiple Sclerosis endure. “We have to offer assistance wherever possible and express gratitude for our blessings. At VorTech, we believe it’s essential to achieve not only business triumphs but to also fulfil our obligations to the society, particularly towards those grappling with formidable challenges.” Contributions are welcome to the fund at this location.
