Friday’s 24 Degrees: Year’s Hottest Day

According to Met Éireann, last Friday was recorded as the warmest day of the year yet, with temperatures peaking at 24.1 degrees in Phoenix Park, Dublin. The meteorological service further predicted a continuance of the warm, dry weather into Saturday, with comparable temperatures throughout the majority of the country. Forecasts indicated possible thermal readings of 17 to 24 degrees.

Morning mist and fog were expected to dissipate on Saturday, paving the way for “prolonged periods of sunshine”, as stated by the national weather experts. However, encroaching clouds from the west were likely to bring showers to the country’s northwest later in the day.

Weather patterns were predicted to become less stable come Sunday, while remaining somewhat warm in certain areas. The emergence of sporadic rainfall was anticipated alongside these warmer conditions. Sunday also saw the mix of sunlight punctuated by cloudy interludes, with intermittent rains, some potentially heavy, and a margin for the occurrence of solitary thunderstorms. Peak temperatures were to fluctuate between 15 and 19 degrees, accompanied by gentle and changing winds.

Sunday evening was expected to see the rain showers gradually dissipate, although rain emergence from the southwest was predicted by morning. Monday’s forecast included additional rain showers—particularly intense in the country’s eastern half—and potential thunderstorms, with top temperatures ranging from 13 to 17 degrees. Light to moderate northerly winds, which could be significantly strong along some coasts, were predicted to arise.

Met Éireann also anticipated more showers in the eastern region on Monday night, leading to the surge of constant or heavy rainfall from the east extending westwards by Tuesday morning. Localised flooding, particularly in Leinster, was seen as a possibility. The weather was forecasted to be drastically cooler than the preceding days, with maximum temperatures of between 11 and 14 degrees and moderate winds from the northwest.

The national forecaster also predicted a continuation of the cooler weather into Wednesday and Thursday, along with more showers—some of which could be heavy. During this period, temperatures were likely to be between 11 and 15 degrees, accompanied mostly by light to moderate wind currents.
