Viktor Orban, the Prime Minister of Hungary, who is known for his right-wing nationalist perspectives, threw his weight behind his long-time friend, former US President Donald Trump’s endeavour to regain his old office. This support came after a late-night meeting took place in Florida, USA.
During their discussion, a plethora of subjects pertaining to both Hungary and the United States came up, focusing particularly on the paramountcy of stringent and defended borders in safeguarding a nation’s sovereignty, elaborated a proclamation from Trump’s campaign.
Orban, perceived frequently in a conflicting stance with fellow members of the European Union, has consistently made contentious choices, such as his non-co-operation in supplying Ukraine with arms or perpetuating economic relationships with Russia in the aftermath of the Ukrainian invasion in 2022 by Russian forces. The Hungarian Prime Minister emphasised that a resolution for the Ukraine issue could only be achieved through Trump’s restoration to the presidency.
In a public statement, Orban gestured towards the criticality of respected world leaders in bringing about peace and highlighted Trump as one of those key individuals. He further urged the return of ‘Mr President’ for the establishment of tranquillity.
The Hungarian leader, known for his tough stance on immigration, his support for families, and advocacy for national sovereignty, is held in high regard by many US conservatives. In a Facebook video, Orban asserted that under Trump’s presidency from 2017 to 2021, the Middle East and Ukraine experienced peace. He added that the ongoing conflict in Ukraine could have been averted had Trump been reelected in 2020.
Orban’s frequent quarrels with the EU over his crackdown against immigration, attempts to exert state control over judiciary, NGOs, and media have drawn criticism for eroding Hungary’s democracy. Orban has been a stern critic of the EU sanctions on Russia, although he ultimately didn’t veto them, and he delayed an EU decision to administer new assistance to Ukraine last December, finally giving his consent early this year. – Reuters
