Tragically, a bus en route from Berlin to Zurich swerved off a main road in east Germany, resulting in the deaths of at least five people, according to reports. The incident unfolded on the A9 motorway, in proximity to Leipzig, roughly around 8.45am by Irish standard time, subsequently causing a closure of the road in both directions.
The reason behind the tragic incident, involving a Flixbus vehicle, remains unclear. As of Wednesday afternoon, both rescue helicopters and ambulances were engaged in rescue services at the crash site.
Olaf Hoppe, a official police representative, informed N-tv television about the severe injuries suffered by many and confirmed the unfortunate death of at least five individuals.
There were 53 passengers and two drivers on the bus as per Flixbus and confirmed by the German new agency, dpa. Flixbus expressed its intent to closely cooperate with local enforcement officials and rescue units to expedite the investigation regarding the cause of the accident.
The A9 motorway serves as a crucial route that connects Berlin and Munich, with the crash site located just beyond the Schkeuditz junction by the Leipzig/Halle airport.
Local police in the state of Saxony publicised via X social media platform, the unfortunate event – a major accident on the A9 led to several fatal injuries and multiple casualties. Flixbus added that the precise conditions leading to the accident are yet to be established and they’re assisting emergency services to gather more information. – AP/Reuters
