Dear Sir,
As a child of a gentleman who was forced to leave his studies at the age of 14 due to fiscal circumstances, I commend Darragh Geraghty’s article, “Familect: words only our family understands” published in the Health + Family section on May 21st. From an early age, my father instilled in me that university education was non-negotiable, or else I would deal with the figurative ‘boot’. Thankfully, this never materialised physically. However, during periods of lax dedication to my studies, the imagery of the aforementioned ‘boot’ resurfaced.
Yours respectfully,
Enda Cullen, Armagh.
