Expressions Related to Rainfall

Dear Reader,

With great fascination, I perused Emer McLysaght’s piece detailing Ireland’s rich lexicon when it comes to describing rain (“The myriad terms for rain are plentiful and indispensable in Ireland”, Life, October 11th). I recall my father, a Cavan man of notable character, stating how a “dawky day” was a term used in his county to denote a day of torrential rainfall.

It’s intriguing to note just how varied our vocabulary is for such a compact nation.
Yours sincerely,
Brid Fitzpatrick, Terenure, Dublin 6W.
