The esteemed RTÉ producer Larry Masterson, renowned for his numerous contributions to various TV programmes during his extensive career, has passed away at the age of 73. A death announcement revealed that Masterson departed peacefully on a Sunday, surrounded by his family, and under the watchful care of Blackrock Hospice personnel.
Originally from the inner areas of Dublin, Masterson made his transition into the television sector precursory to his tenure as a social worker. For over four decades, Masterson graced the television industry, contributing significantly to some flagship projects, among them The Late Late Show, and Brendan O’ Connor’s The Saturday Night Show.
Kevin Bakhurst, RTÉ’s director general, eulogised Masterson as a monumental figure in the television industry, garnering deep respect, widespread admiration, and immense affection. Masterson initially ventured into current affairs but quickly discovered his true calling in entertainment. His collaboration with Mike Murphy on The Live Mike, notorious for its Candid Camera-style inserts, was not only revolutionary but became cultural staples, enduring to this day.
With Masterson at the helm of The Late Late Show, the world’s most enduring live entertainment show, he ensured the programme remained a prominent feature in Irish culture. Masterson likened an excellent Late Late Show to an entertaining night out. Most viewers, perhaps unknowingly, attribute many enjoyable nights to Masterson’s efforts, a fact that will ensure his contributions linger in memory, commented Mr Bakhurst.
Mourning his demise are Masterson’s spouse Hazel, his daughters Kerri and Tara, as well as a wider family circle.
