“Expenditure and Results in Healthcare”

Dear Editor,

It raises a curious question as to why Ireland, despite a higher than average health expenditure compared to other OECD nations, merely possesses half the standard level of critical-care beds per person. This is an issue highlighted in the recent news report titled, “Ireland’s critical care beds fall short of European standard” from May 29th.

If we adjust our healthcare spending based on the age demographic, Ireland falls among the top ten global spenders according to OECD data from 2022. This consequently leads us to ask: why isn’t our health service considered within the top ten worldwide?

Yours sincerely,

CORMAC O’CARROLL
