Ex-skipper William Porterfield has relinquished his post on the governing body of Cricket Ireland just shy of a year since he accepted it. Last spring, Porterfield’s appointment as one of the four new directors to the board was publicised. It has recently come to light that Porterfield, who has over 300 caps for his nation, has stepped down from the position. His most recent appearance for Ireland was in 2022.
Earlier in the month, it was declared that Porterfield has taken up the role of assistant coach at the English county team, Lancashire. The decision to part with Porterfield was difficult, acknowledged Warren Deutrom, the CEO of Cricket Ireland. He stated that the demands of Porterfield’s new role at Lancashire made it tough for him to offer his best to the board of Cricket Ireland.
In Deutrom’s words, “Porty didn’t want to do the job unless he’s going to do it to the best of his ability”.
During the past season, Porterfield balanced his duties on the Cricket Ireland board and his role as assistant coach at Gloucestershire.
Porterfield’s choice to step down predated the disclosure of the governing body’s decision to acquire two Tesla vehicles for the use of its senior executives.
