Everton managed to secure a triumph against Brentford thanks to Idrissa Gueye’s 60-minute goal in the Premier League on Saturday, ensuring the club stays clear of relegation. A quick cross delivered by Jack Harrison to Jarrad Branthwaite near the penalty area was intercepted by Nathan Collins. The ball, however, rolled in the direction of Gueye who took the opportunity to land a successful right-foot shot. The victory allowed Everton, currently ranked 15th, to tally up 36 points after 35 games, leading 18th-placed Luton Town by 11 points who also have three remaining games upon a 2-1 defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers earlier that day. On the other side, Brentford retained their spot at 16th with 35 points, with survival assured by Luton’s loss.
In a separate match, Wolverhampton Wanderers gave further setbacks to relegation-endangered Luton Town with a 2-1 victory courtesy of goals from Hwang Hee-chan and Toti Gomes at Molineux Stadium on Saturday. This success escalates Wolves to the 10th position in the league, holding 46 points, while Luton stays at 18th position with 25 points and three matches remaining.
Before the opening goal in the 39th minute, Luton started strongly. However, a counter-attack led by Wolves saw Hwang dart down the left side, receiving a pass from Matheus Cunha. He then swerved inwards, delivering a low shot that rebounded off Luton’s Teden Mengi. The South Korean striker has had an impressive season, having scored 11 goals in 27 participations in the season. Luton’s defensive issues persist, with Wolves’ centre-half Gomes extending the lead in the second half’s early minutes. A neat cross from Mario Lemina gave Gomes the chance to land a successful head shot past goalkeeper Thomas Kaminski off a short corner.
Luton has let in 77 goals during this season, marking the poorest record in the Premier League, save for Sheffield United (97), who were assured of their demotion to the Championship following their 5-1 loss to Newcastle United over the weekend.
Despite being under firm control in the latter half of the game, Luton was placed under increased strain towards the end by the home team, narrowing the gap with an 80th-minute goal by Carlton Morris. However, this effort failed to trigger a rebound.
