Ethics in Contemporary Combat

Sir,

Brian O’Brien’s response to Joe Humphreys’s commentary on Immanuel Kant’s ethical perspective of war serves as a valuable contrasting viewpoint to the prevalent blame assigning seen in most discussions of contemporary armed conflict (Unthinkable, September 16th).

In considering the current state of global strife, from actual warfare to disputes rooted in cultural differences, coupled with societal division and civil warfare, one cannot help but recall a phrase often credited to either Betrand Russell or George Orwell, both of whom Mr. Humphreys mentioned at the beginning of his piece. It states, “War does not determine who is correct, it determines who remains.”– Yours sincerely,
BRIAN O’BRIEN,
Kinsale,
Co Cork.
