“England Triumphs Over Slovakia, Bellingham Stars”

“Knockout Stage: England Triumphs over Slovakia 2-1

England turned the tables against Slovakia, making it through to the Euro 2024 quarter-finals after a nail-biting extra time following a potential risk of defeat right up to the final moments. Gareth Southgate’s squad overcame an initial lag of 1-0, the result of a first-half strike by Ivan Schranz.

However, Jude Bellingham salvaged the situation for England with a spectacular bicycle kick past goalkeeper Martin Dubravka. This success was credited to Marc Guehi’s deflection of a lengthy throw, equalising the match in stoppage time’s fifth minute and pushing it into extra time.

It took just five minutes into the extended time for England to seize the reins. Harry Kane, scoring his tournament’s second goal – a sniper’s header – post Ivan Toney’s deflected header in the box originating from an errant Eberechi Eze attempt caused an eruption of joy amongst the England supporters.

Schranz’s initial success was his third throughout the competition, facilitated by David Strelec’s skillful assist, despite Kyle Walker erroneously keeping the striker onside.

This match was anticipated to be Southgate’s last as England’s journey looked doomed. Yet, his tenure continues, and the team is motoring on to face Switzerland in the quarter-finals.

Detailed reportage by Ken Early is expected in the following days. “
