Embraces and Affection

Dear Reader,

It was suggested in a recent opinion article discussing hugs and kisses that the author was delighted to be kissed by a postal worker and a local authority representative. It is speculated that the primary aim of this piece was to illicit responses (“The merits of a genuine hug are significant, but the art is often poorly executed”, Lifestyle, 16th October).

In the contemporary society of Ireland, any service provider found to be showing such personal affection towards their customers or clients would likely face disciplinary action, and rightly so, in my view.

Among postmen or local council officials and their clientele, a mere smile and handshake should suffice as an offering of friendliness. In most cases, a simple smile without the supplementary handshake is more than adequate. – Kind Regards,

Pavel Marianski.

Dear Reader,

The Covid pandemic over the past few years has demonstrated that to prevent the spread of infections, we should limit our hugging and kissing. It’s also become clear that non-familial or non-romantic demonstrations of affection could lead to substantial problems. A case in point being a Spanish football official.

We should adhere to having our arms and lips to ourselves and be content with a standard, conservative handshake with strangers or acquaintances in day-to-day life. – Kind Regards,

Dear Reader,

I find myself in complete agreement with Céire Sadlier regarding the advantage of a heartfelt hug. There are two pronounced categories of huggers – those that are excellent and those that are dismal. The joy brought by a genuine, warm embrace cannot be matched, and a feeble hug is among the worst experiences.

Make the decision to either hug in earnest or refrain from doing so altogether! – Kind Regards,
