Elderly Woman Attacked, Treated in Hospital

An elderly woman in her 80s was attacked by a male trespasser on Monday night at her nursing home in the Midlands. The man, believed to have breached security of the care home through a door, assaulted her in her room in an incident deemed extremely severe by the Gardaí. He reportedly attempted to intimidate and control her during his time in the room.

Immediately on receiving the alert, Gardaí arrived at the scene in Athlone and arrested the suspected attacker. Upon apprehension, he was questioned and expected to face trial at the District Court in Athlone, Co Westmeath, on Wednesday morning.

When asked to comment, the Garda Headquarters confirmed they were “looking into a serious attack that took place at a care home” in Athlone that Monday evening. The victim, an octogenarian lady, was taken to the Midlands Regional Hospital Tullamore for receiving medical help. Thankfully, her injuries were not life-threatening. The accused, a man in his 50s, was arrested on site.

As per the official statement, the apprehended man was later charged pertaining to the assault and was scheduled to appear in court.
