The family of renowned author Enda O’Brien has announced her intention to be laid to rest on Holy Island in Lough Derg. Born and raised near Scarriff in County Clare, particularly in the Tuamgraney area, Ms. O’Brien found fame with the publication of the first book of her trilogy, ‘The Country Girls’ in 1960. However, her work was subsequently suppressed by the censors.
On the RTÉ programme, Drivetime, Michael Blake, her nephew conveyed her wish of returning to Ireland as her final abode. Ms. O’Brien desired to have a service conducted at the Tuamgraney Church, a symbolically significant place for her, where she was christened and had communion, he explained.
“She would be interred on Holy Island” said Michael. The plans for her funeral are still under discussion, he added.
