Revenue officers at Rosslare Europort confiscated some 9.5 million cigarettes, which would amount to an estimated loss to the Exchequer of around €6.3 million. The contraband, brand-named as ‘Marlboro Gold’, was discovered in a freight unit, which had arrived via a ferry from Dunkirk, France. The seizure, which occurred on Thursday, resulted from risk-profiling activities. Investigations are in progress, and a man in his 20s has been interrogated about the seizure. This is part of an ongoing mission by the Revenue to curb the illicit sale and distribution of tobacco products within the underground economy.
