Revenue officials discovered nearly 8 million rogue cigarettes, valued around €7.1 million, during a thorough search. Found at Dublin Port, the 7,920,000 cigarettes correspond to a potential loss of €5.6 million for the Exchequer. Revenue personnel made this discovery following a search of an isolated container that recently came off a ship from Rotterdam.
In a separate incident, Revenue confiscated 22.5kg of herbal cannabis worth around €450,000. Vacuum-sealed illicit drugs were detected within the luggage of a passenger recently arriving at Dublin Airport from Ibiza.
A spokesperson from Revenue confirmed that these seizures form part of their continuous endeavours to target unlawful drug importation and the distribution and sale of non-regulated tobacco products. He stated that current investigations are ongoing and no additional information is accessible at the moment.
The spokesperson further invited businesses and individuals to share any confidential information related to smuggling with Revenue by calling 1800 295 295.
