“€6m Workspace Funding Boost for Artists”

The government has unveiled a new pilot programme allocating funds to local councils throughout the nation to expand working spaces for artists. Councils can apply for either €150,000 or €300,000, hinging on their region, and they’ll be expected to match 40 per cent of the funding awarded.

This introduction follows research from the Department of Arts and Culture highlighting a considerable shortage in available artist workshops. The study found a significant deficiency in creative spaces such as studios and venues for performances countrywide. Currently, 43 per cent of all buildings for visual artists’ workshop space is owned by regional councils across the nation.

Minister for Arts and Culture, Catherine Martin, made the announcement of the programme, acknowledging the struggles artists face in securing fitting workshops. In 2023, a grant of €3 million was provided to Dublin City Council, aiding the creation of 60 artist workshop spaces. The Minister’s recent announcement aims to address the lack of workspace issue in the rest of the country.

The application process for the operational programme is now underway.
