The investigation into Josilaine Dos Santos Ribeiro’s death has been delayed as Garda officers required unique software from the UK, which was not available domestically. Ribeiro, a 36-year-old Brazilian woman, was fatally hit by a lorry whilst riding her e-bike on Dolphin’s Barn bridge in Dublin, shortly prior to 12:30pm on the 6th of November, 2023.
Her serious injuries were treated at St James’s Hospital but she was sadly pronounced dead around 45 minutes following the accident. Ribeiro’s identity was confirmed by her aunt, who came to Ireland from Brazil the subsequent day, as detailed in a Dublin District Coroner’s Court hearing on the following Monday.
Inspector Paul Curtis from the Rathmines Garda station explained the continuing investigation lines and requested a six-month deferral until the investigation can be moved forward. He indicated that accessing camera footage from the lorry’s hard drive is causing the hold-up.
Difficulties were encountered whilst downloading the footage, which prompted the need to seek software from the UK. The software is now secured, as noted by Mr Curtis. He stated that the footage is vital for the lead forensic investigator’s report.
Dr Cróna Gallagher, the coroner, has given the OK for the requested six-month deferral. According to Mr Curtis, DPP will receive the file after the investigation concludes, a death due to multiple traumatic injuries from a road traffic incident is ascertained as the cause of death by Dr Gallagher.
The coroner also conveyed the investigation’s technical complications to a family member who was attending remotely and extended her and the court’s condolences, acknowledging their loss as even more distressing due to its distance from home.
In an unrelated matter, an inquest into the death of André Laderio, an eight-year-old boy who died following a cycling accident in Cork, has been postponed to account for ongoing criminal proceedings. Laderio was hit by a car in the Ballinrea roundabout in Carrigaline, Co Cork, in August 2023. He was taken to Temple Street Hospital in Dublin, where he sadly passed away four days afterwards.
A short session, attended virtually by his parents, reported the initiation of criminal proceedings following the arrest and charges against a man, aged 61, on September 12th in relation to his demise. Given that the case is now under juridical examination, an application for postponement of the inquest for the eight-year-old tot until the completion of legal proceedings was approved by the coroner. Dr Gallagher, the coroner, noted the cause of demise as numerous severe injuries caused by a vehicular accident.
