Dwelling overseas is a life-changing experience that enables us to explore unfamiliar cultures, viewpoints, and possibilities

The journey of living in an unfamiliar country is a life-altering event that broadens our understanding of distinct cultures, viewpoints, and prospects. As I ponder upon my years in Abu Dhabi, in the United Arab Emirates, I can’t help but feel an overwhelming sense of thankfulness for the amazing experience I had.

Born and raised in the charming village of Faulmore in the Mullet Peninsula, in County Mayo, my decision to relocate to Abu Dhabi in the August of 2014 to pursue a teaching career was, indeed, a step into unexplored territory. Back then, the UAE was relatively unknown, and moving to an environment so different from home was daunting. But I realised I would regret letting such an opportunity pass me by later in life.

For nearly a decade, I assimilated myself into the lively city that is Abu Dhabi. My earnest efforts and commitment propelled me through the ranks of my profession, and I ultimately assumed the role of assistant head in my school, with a focus on pastoral care and wellbeing. The UAE became my adoptive home, and its culturally diverse and dynamic society cultivated in me a profound feeling of belongingness.

To talk of the UAE and not mention its stunning sunrises and sunsets would be an omission. The skies ablaze in shades of red and orange had a profound effect on me. My memories of the UAE are often filled with the unique taste of hummus, the smell of shisha, and the reverberating call to Friday prayer, showcasing the peaceful cohabitation of various religions.

Thinking back on the UAE, my mind is filled with memories of camels, palm trees swaying in the wind, and the delightful taste of dates. I remember the unexplored hiking paths hidden in the UAE’s east, a secret treasure ready to be uncovered. This is a land where the flavours of halloumi cheese and zaatar can enliven your palate, and the term inshallah, translating to God’s will, indicates the deep cultural faith in Islam and fate’s role.

Relishing the varied gastronomic offerings of the UAE’s bilingual eateries, I was treated to a delicious range of taste sensations. The pleasure of delightful breakfast feasts became an anticipated habit, giving me the opportunity to sample an assortment of delightful meals. Immersed in the nation’s rich cultural backdrop, I admired the grace of traditional abayas, the extended, free-flowing attire worn by some Muslim women, whilst practising yoga on the serene beaches here turned into moments of tranquillity and self-discovery.

My weekends transformed into a safe haven of tranquillity, occupied with soaking up the sun on immaculate beaches and savouring the sensation of the white sand under my feet. Moreover, who could overlook the splendour of witnessing others enjoying their coffee (since I am a non-coffee drinker) garnished with exquisite gold flakes at the famous Emirates Palace, where each sip gave a feeling of opulent indulgence?

In contrast to the mesmerising scenery and thrilling encounters, it’s the individuals I encountered in the UAE that hold a unique space in my heart. The relationships I built during this period are priceless, and I am confident they will last forever.

In the UAE, a mixed group of individuals, each with their unique tales and histories, come together, and it was through these interactions that I truly realised the beauty of human connection.

As my journey took a fresh direction, I made my way back to Ireland in September 2023 to work towards my dream of earning a master’s degree in psychology. Transitioning back to Ireland after being away for a significant time did come with its difficulties, but I am thankful for the warmness and amiableness of the Irish people, my family and friends.

The picturesque Dublin mountains and the fascinating countryside serve as reminders of the natural beauty that surrounds us. Valuing the blue skies, so treasured in this part of the world, I find comfort in rainy days, which provide an ideal setting for focused studies and deep thinking.

While some might attribute luck to the situations we find ourselves in, I am a firm believer that life is a result of the decisions we take. It’s undeniable that some may seem luckier than others, but at the end of the day, we all make choices that influence our destiny, even if we cannot control the precise outcomes.

Here’s a totally revitalised version of the story for anyone considering a significant shift in their lives, or perhaps an exciting expedition. I can’t recommend enough that you seize the opportunity. Embracing the unknown can lead to personal growth and satisfaction. Even if things don’t turn out as envisioned, the fact that you attempted promises a regret-free existence, which is invaluable in and of itself.

Life is a transient trip, and living in the UAE emphasised the significance of seizing opportunities and taking risks. I’m eternally thankful for the experiences that have shaped my identity today. Advancing through life, I carry with me the memories, lessons, and relationships gifted to me by the UAE, aware that there’s a sea of possibilities awaiting in the future.

In this brief existence we call life, I hope clear skies are always in your itinerary!
