Shelbourne, the team currently leading the Premier Division, has confirmed that their gaffer, Damien Duff, has inked a long-term agreement to remain at the club. Though the specifics of the contract duration are still under wraps, it is known that Assistant Manager Joey O’Brien, along with several other staff members, have also renewed their commitment to the Drumcondra football team.
Duff, an ex-Ireland wing, took up the managerial position at Shelbourne FC in November 2021. In his inaugural season, Duff led Shels to secure seventh position in 2022 and to reach the FAI Cup final for the first time in 11 years. The team’s growth remained steady into 2023, when they finished in fourth place under challenging conditions. Moreover, Duff successfully brought Shels back to European football after an 18-year hiatus.
Currently, Shelbourne are maintaining a slight edge in the Premier Division, with a two-point lead and an extra game to play over Derry City. They also sit comfortably 12 points ahead of Shamrock Rovers, the reigning champions, who have yet to play a game held in hand over the table leaders.
Commenting on his renewed commitment, Duff stated: “The players, the staff and the club are always in my heart and in my head. Time to rise again.”
On the development, Shelbourne FC’s chief executive Barry Mocke expressed enthusiasm. “We are elated to have Damien Duff and his coaching staff reaffirming their long-term commitment to Shelbourne FC,” said Mocke. “Damien’s commitment, foresight, and leadership are an invaluable asset to our club, and we anticipate building a bright future together. I extend gratitude to the shareholders and board members for their support in this decision. This is a significant stride towards creating a sustainable and triumphant club.”
