An urgent report detailing the nature and magnitude of a sinkhole in Sandymount Green has been requested from the Dublin City Council. The sinkhole materialised at the fringes of the footpath just outside Sandymount Green’s Mace store around 4pm on Wednesday and was deep enough to swallow a two-metre chunk of road that was marked with double yellow lines. To prevent human accidents, employees from the shop quickly surrounded the pit with a flower pot, a barrel, and tape, and it wasn’t long before the police arrived to secure the area.
A temporary repair, including filling the hole and covering it with provisional tarmac, was done by the Dublin City Council. Ongoing investigations are being done to unearth the cause of the sinkhole and the likelihood of more pits forming in the vicinity.
Dermot Lacey, a local council member, has requested the council to produce a report on the sinkhole ASAP and suggested a briefing for council members at the City Council’s South East Area Committee meeting due Friday 19th, if need be.
Mr. Lacey stated, “Folks are anxious. I’d urge the council to alleviate concerns about a possible recurrence. If that’s impossible, they should inform the public about the preventive measures.” In preparation for the Southeast Area Committee event, he has requested for a report and, if necessary, a briefing.
It’s worth noting that a section of Dalkey village in South Dublin was cordoned off in June 2020 following a sinkhole’s emergence on Castle Street. The breakdown was later attributed to the disintegration of a subterranean sewage pipe.
