Drama and the Past

“Dear Editor
I’m writing to say that unlike Frank McNally, I was not present at Stormont to witness the Belfast Agreement talks (as documented in the Irishman’s Diary on 11th October). Instead, I was in front of the television and radio, following the proceedings closely, whilst harbouring scepticism regarding the potential result. This scepticism was born from my personal experiences growing up in Northern Ireland.

The play ‘Agreement’, written by Owen McCafferty, is an apt depiction of these talks, creatively weaving together the political disputes and extensive paperwork into a captivating drama. No small feat, McCafferty’s work is truly commendable and provides an engaging narrative of proceedings that people are willing to pay to see.

McCafferty has certainly delivered with this play, and its content should now serve as an impetus for Northern Irish political leaders to create a future filled with hope, inclusivity and wealth for all citizens.

Yours faithfully,
Enda Cullen,
Armagh.”
