Mr Gandhi urged higher-income countries to donate doses to the countries which have a lack of coverage of vaccines.
The World Health Organization (WHO) revealed that about a dozen countries are still waiting for Covid-19 vaccines. Sadly, many of them are in Africa. Some of the world’s poorest countries are on the lists. They may be left behind in the battle against Covid-19.
Africa has accepted just 1% of the total number of the jabs despite 16% of people worldwide. Those last in line on the continent include Burundi, Chad, Tanzania, Burkina Faso, and Eritrea.
Gian Gandhi, Unicef’s coordinator for Covax said that with new variants emerged, the danger is in sight and is getting bigger. Covax is the UN-backed programme to help low and middle-income countries. Mr Gandhi urged higher-income countries to donate doses to the countries which have a lack of coverage of vaccines.
Dr Oumaima Djarma, a doctor from a small hospital in Chad, exposed there are no vaccines even for doctors and nurses. Though they should take care of patients who tested positive for Covid-19. If other countries have an argument about which one is the best vaccine, there is no argument over which Covid-19 vaccine is the best there.
She also found it unfair because everyone dies from this condition. It made her sad. Chad is expected to get Pfizer doses next month. However, the country should ensure the cold storage facilities are available. This is a challenge for Chad because a third of its country is in the Sahara desert, while the temperature regularly touches 43,5 Celcius.
Chad should learn from Haiti. Haiti will earn 756,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine by Covax. However, the government officials claimed they did not have the infrastructure to save them and worried the vaccines need to throw the vaccines away.
Several small islands in the Pacific also have not received any vaccines yet. But it has a lack of outbreaks. It means that there is no urgency there. For example, Vanuatu. The country is waiting for the AstraZeneca vaccine that should arrive later this month. But Vanuatu only has three cases of Covid-19 and all are being quarantined.
