“Downsizing Homes: Mind Apartment Service Charges”

Dear Editor,

In relation to the article “ESRI Report Indicates Over Two-Thirds of Individuals Reside in Overly Large Houses” published on March 27th, one noticeable void in the ESRI’s stance that the elder population should swap larger homes for apartments is the contentious issue of multi-unit service costs. Between 2005 and 2022, I owned a maisonette which had no lifts or shared indoor spaces, yet the shifting landscape of fees within the complex was a four-figure sum annually, that strained my budget to the extreme. I can confidently say I’ll avoid purchasing any multi-unit complexes in the future.

This debate requires a good dose of realism.

Yours faithfully,
