The Galway senior hurling squad is set to welcome back Micheál Donoghue as their team manager, a recommendation made by the county’s management committee. Donoghue, a member of the Clarinbridge club, previously helmed the Galway senior side from late 2015, succeeding Anthony Cunningham, until his departure at the close of the 2019 season.
Galway GAA validated his reprisal on a Thursday evening. During his former tenure, Galway triumphed over Waterford in the All-Ireland final, securing the Liam MacCarthy Cup in 2019.
In 2022, Donoghue assumed managerial duties for the Dublin senior hurling team. Despite a less than stellar performance against Kilkenny in the Leinster final and a worthy resistance against future finalists Cork in the quarter-final of the same season, satisfaction was elusive. After a quarter-final defeat to the Rebels, Donoghue declared his intention to resign from his role as Dublin manager earlier this month.
An announcement unveiled on a Thursday evening stated, “The pleasure is ours at the Galway GAA management committee to propose Micheál Donoghue as the Galway Senior Hurling Manager. On the evening of Monday, 2nd September 2024, Micheál and his team will be nominated for a four-year tenure at the County Committee Meeting. Our full support is with Micheál and his team. We anticipate a fruitful collaboration in the upcoming years.”
