1. Bazaruto Archipelago
One of the best beach destinations in Mozambique is the Bazaruto archipelago. Surrounded by pristine, turquoise, blue-green waters, the archipelago is truly a haven to those seeking a relaxing holiday.. Whether it is diving, snorkelling, angling or island hopping, the archipelago offers these possibilities in abundance.
Bazaruto (Ilha do Bazaruto), the biggest island on the archipelago, is connected to the mainland by both a grass airstrip and a paved tarmac. There are 2 high end accommodations on the island, namely Bazaruto Lodge and Indigo Bay.
Benguerra’s most important attraction is its intact dune forest. Migratory birds and crocodiles are to be found in its freshwater lakes surrounded by spectacular sand dunes. The 2 main lodges are Benguerra Island Lodge and Marlin Lodge.
Magaruque island is dotted by white, sandy, deserted beaches which are perfect for snorkelling or scuba diving.
Paradise Island or Ilha da Santa Carolina is an isolated beach destination. Most visitors do day trips on the island or make a stop over en route to fishing, dhow cruising and other water activities. The visibility of the water on this island is excellent provided there was no storm or heavy rains. The coral and marine life is abundant and often, shoals of fish can be seen from the shore.
2. The Quirimbas Archipelago
The Quirimbas Archipelago is located in northern Mozambique, it is comprised of 32 coral islands and islets. Accessible by boat or air from the mainland, the most frequently visited islands are Matemo and Ibo. Ibo played a significant role in the trade history of the country owing to its strategic location. Today, the remains of colonial Portuguese architecture can be seen in the form of forts and abandoned mansions.
Just adjacent to Ibo is Matemo, an island of about 8 kilometers in length. It is a serene area with deserted beaches perfect for relaxation. There is only one resort on this island.
Discovering the best beach destinations in Mozambique is the essence of visiting the country. The raw beauty of its beaches, richness of marine and land life, and diversity of water-based activities make the country a perfect travel destination.
