Difficult to Avoid Making Comparisons

Dear Sir,

Back in May, I enjoyed an exquisite cup of coffee coupled with a delicious, toasted sandwich on a terrace with a view of La Concha Bay in San Sebastián, all for just €3.50. Despite the temptation, I refrained from drawing comparisons with Ireland, acknowledging the lower wages and living costs in Spain.

However, I found it impossible to resist the inclination this week when I purchased a medium cup of coffee from a machine at a petrol station in Co Limerick. Drinking it from a cardboard cup outside the establishment set me back a whopping €3.10. With all good intent,

Liam Stenson,
Galway.
