“Derry Woman’s Rape, Murder: Man Charged”

After the tragic murder and sexual assault of a woman in Derry, a man has been placed in preventative detention. A 65-year-old lady, Montserrat Martorell, was discovered deceased in her Derry city apartment the previous weekend. Ciaran Murray, 28, from Gortfoyle Place in the same city, has been indicted on the grounds of murder, rape, and purposely putting lives at risk through arson on Saturday, the 24th of August. On Thursday, he made a court appearance via video link at Derry’s Magistrates’ Court. Upon having the charges read to him, he acknowledged understanding them. A female detective inspector expressed confidence in being able to link him to the charges. During the short court appearance, no requests for bail were submitted. The case is scheduled to be brought up again in court on the 26th of September.
