Derry Couple Guilty of Illegal Streaming

A couple in Co Derry has been found guilty of running an unlawful TV streaming service valued over £700,000 (€836,560). The service’s illegal operations led to Cormac McGuckin (38), from Bellaghy, receiving a two-year prison term, with an additional two years suspended after acknowledging his guilt at Omagh Crown Court. His charges included engaging in a fraudulent business and owning materials for fraudulent use. He also received charges for dealing with illegal property in various ways.

Alongside him, Maura McGuckin (34), also from Bellaghy, was given a one-year suspended sentence following her admission of guilt in using illegal funds for holiday and car expenses and holding illegal property. The transactions were made from 21st April 2017 to 18th June 2020.

The McGuckins’ sentencing follows an investigation conducted by the Northern Ireland Police Service (PSNI) into the underselling of unauthorized TV broadcasting subscriptions or “dodgy box” services. The couple conceded in their charges, admitting their involvement exceeded £700,000, according to PSNI.

Det Sgt Robinson, in a post-sentencing statement, disclosed the investigation’s details. Following a report from the Federation Against Copyright Theft [Fact], a detailed probe was carried out by detectives and local officers from the mid-Ulster criminal investigation unit.

Robinson criticized the unlawful operation, saying it functioned openly for years and was treated like a legitimate business. He explained that the money raised was used for luxury car loans and extravagant holiday costs.

Robinson also pointed out that such illegal services are not “victimless crimes” as they directly affect businesses and consumers. Authorities will not tolerate these activities and will pursue investigations in cooperation with other agencies. He also cautioned that users of such services could also face legal repercussions.
