Denmark Secures Second; Serbia Exits Euro 2024

In their match against Serbia, Denmark secured the necessary scoreless draw to secure the Group C’s second spot and progress into the Euro 2024’s knockout stages. The best chance for Denmark fell to Rasmus Hojlund, who muffed it, and Serbia, who required a victory for a chance at qualification, failed to seize their opportunity and exited the tournament with a single point in their favour.

Serbia’s Aleksandar Mitrovic sent a late opportunity off-target, while Kasper Schmeichel easily handled Sergej Milinkovic-Savic’s attempt during stoppage time. Serbia’s late rally in Munich was unsuccessful. Christian Eriksen, who with his 133rd cap became Denmark’s most capped player, forced a straightforward save from Predrag Rajkovic with a long-range shot during the game’s first half.

A 23rd minute goal by Denmark was disallowed as the referee decided Eriksen’s corner had curtailed out of play while being delivered. Following another attempt by Hojlund which was unsuccessful, Serbia seemed to intensify their tactics at the beginning of the second half.

Substitutes Dusan Tadic and Luka Jovic introduced more dynamism into the Serbian offensive line. They thought they had bagged the initial goal at 54 minutes when Jovic, accepting Tadic’s pass, rounded Schmeichel. However, the goal was marked as offside. In the final stages of the game, Mitrovic sent the ball wide following Dusan Vlahovic’s assist. Later on, Vlahovic headed the ball into the top netting and Milinkovic-Savic directed Serbia’s final chance squarely at Schmeichel in stoppage time.
