Debate Surrounding Child Safety in Science Fiction

Gentleman,
It is truly disheartening to see politicians in Dáil Éireann embroiled in the controversy involving Sinn Féin, arising due to statements made by press officials stationed at the Northern Ireland office. Given the long and grim historical record regarding education, societal norms and church-based affairs in our country, one would expect all political factions to expend their efforts towards establishing stringent child protection measures. This would include thorough inspection and necessary procedures for disclosure and accusations. No political entity or individual in the political spectrum should require reminders of the potential for such internal disputes to be aggravating for those who have been previously victimised by abuse. As usual, the voice missing from this ‘discussion’ is that of the victims. It’s high time that leadership takes precedence on this matter. Pointless political mud-slinging benefits no one, regardless of whether elections are impending or not.

Sincerely,
Stephen O’Hara,
Carrowmore.

Gentleman,

Mary McDonald defended her political group’s actions in Dáil by claiming that prominent figures from the coalition parties have previously written character references for “convicted rapists and child molesters”. Highlighting the ‘two-way transparency’ (News, 9th October), it seems her argument essentially was, ‘Our misbehaviour is akin to the rest of you’.

Voters should keep this in mind when being persuaded with promises of ‘alteration’ in the forthcoming month.

Sincerely,
Michael Geaney,
Terenure,
