Roberto De Zerbi, the manager of Brighton, is set to depart from the club following the conclusion of this season with a final match against Manchester United. Leading Albion from September 2022 after his predecessor, Graham Potter, joined Chelsea, the Italian manager quickly found success, steering the team towards its first 6th place finish in the top-tier.
This accomplishment ensured Brighton’s participation in the current season’s Europa League and prompted connections between De Zerbi and various prominent positions. Under De Zerbi’s leadership, Brighton reached the last 16 in the Europa League and currently sits in 10th place in the Premier League, with one match remaining.
In a statement, De Zerbi expressed his sadness about leaving Brighton but equally stated he was proud of the milestones achieved by his team and staff with the help of the club and its loyal fanbase in the last two groundbreaking seasons. He added that the decision will allow both him and the club to pursue what’s best fitting for them individually, maintaining their unique beliefs, visions and values. Following a demanding two-year stint in the Premier League, De Zerbi emphasised his intention to take some time off before contemplating his next steps.
Even though the announcement might be surprising for some, there had been considerable talks about the 44-year-old’s future for quite some time. When questioned about his position back in March, he had cited discrepancies over a contract. He emphasised the importance of planning long-term, rather than merely focusing on contractual matters.
Brighton’s owner, Tony Bloom, clarified that the decision to part ways was made by mutual consent. He expressed his gratitude towards De Zerbi for his splendid two-season service in driving the club to historical heights and triggering an unforgettable first venture into Europe for the Brighton supporters. He concluded that the timing of the decision allows Brighton to strategise for the upcoming season and provides De Zerbi with ample time to contemplate his future career.
