It appears that Davy Fitzgerald is on the brink of being confirmed as the manager for Antrim’s senior hurling team on the forthcoming Monday night. Fitzgerald, hailing from Clare, is poised to lead the Saffrons, with his appointment set to be validated during the county board meeting on Monday. His ascension follows his resignation as manager for Waterford just over a month ago.
This new appointment has surfaced due to Darren Gleeson’s withdrawal as Antrim’s manager after a close to five-year tenure. Significantly, this will be Fitzgerald’s fifth stint at the senior intercounty level, previously serving Waterford’s hurlers, his home team Clare, Wexford, and as a coach for Cork’s camogie team.
The long travel distance between Clare and Waterford was a key consideration in Fitzgerald’s decision to step down previously, especially following the birth of his two-year-old son, Dáithí Óg. Despite the commuting concern, Fitzgerald, last month, expressed his experiences with his son as transformative yet different.
Now, Fitzgerald is gearing up for a potentially lengthier commute as he prepares to lead Antrim. His association with intercounty teams is uninterrupted, having been a part of these teams each season since accepting the position with Waterford’s hurlers halfway through the 2008 season, a mere three months after he hung up his boots as an intercounty player.
