Czech Republic, Georgia Draw, Missed Chances

In a twist for Group F, Czech Republic and Georgia shared a 1-1 draw, leaving the fate of their Euro 2024 journey uncertain. A milestone goal from Patrik Schick, his sixth in the European Championship marking a new Czech record, was only sufficient to balance out the early penalty by Georgia’s Georges Mikautadze. The Czech team dominated but failed to secure a much-needed victory.

To progress to the knockout stage, the Czech Republic must now vanquish Turkey in their last Group F game. Meanwhile, Georgia, often underestimated, faces a monumental challenge against Portugal.

Adding to the tension was a late-game calf injury to Schick. With a total of six goals across the two latest European Championships, Schick has outscored both Cristiano Ronaldo and Harry Kane.

Despite the constant pressure, Georgia provided a strong performance. In the first half alone, their goalie, Giorgi Mamardashvili, repelled eight advances on the goal. An overturned goal by Croatia’s Adam Hlozek due to VAR, and a misfortunate stroke by Robin Hranac who scored against his own team, gave Georgia the edge at halftime.

Schick’s equalising goal came off a rebound from substitute Ondrej Lingr’s header, yet the Czechs were unable to capitalise further on their ascendency. While Georgia celebrated obtaining their first major tournament point, they missed an opportunity to claim full points when Saba Objanidze missed a move with the game’s final touch.
