CSO reports a minor rise in the activity of road cargo transport

The Central Statistics Office released data indicating that the State transported 165.2 million tonnes of goods via road networks. A detailed quarterly and yearly report by the CSO disclosed that during the final quarter of 2023, the road freight figures reached an amount of 37.1 million tonnes, showing a slight decrease as compared to the 39.2 million tonnes from the same time frame the previous year.

Out of all sectors, road construction or building sites received the most deliveries, forming 39% of the total nation’s road freight jobs. Also, the transportation of food held a prominent position amongst sectors causing the highest road activity throughout the year.

Concerning trade partnerships in 2023, the United Kingdom topped the list for Ireland, with France being the crucial EU member. The data reveals a minor surge of 1% in the tonnes of goods transported by road, displaying an increment of 1% from 2022 and a 4% rise from 2019 quantities, voiced Damien Lenihan, a statistician from the transport division.

Lenihan also noted the key contributing sectors to vehicle kilometres were foodstuffs and the miscellaneous group.
