Crash in Donegal claims life of motorcyclist in his 60s

A man in his sixties, who was riding a motorcycle, succumbed to his injuries following a solitary vehicle collision on the R257 at Bunbeg in Donegal. The incident occurred just prior to 3 pm on Wednesday. The local coroner has been informed and plans for a post-mortem examination are underway, according to officials. As part of the investigations, the Garda Forensic Collision Investigators temporarily sealed off the area, which is now open for traffic.

This was the second loss of life on Irish roads within 24 hours. Earlier on the same day, an elderly woman passed away in Dublin, following a car crash. Now, the Gardaí are urging anyone who may have witnessed the Bunbeg incident, especially those with any video recordings from the area at the time, to come forward.

According to recent figures, there has been an increase in fatalities on Irish roads, with the toll rising to 130 in 2024, compared to the same timeframe in the previous year. Of these, drivers constituted the majority with 52 deaths, followed by passengers at 29, pedestrians at 21, motorcyclists at 17, and cyclists at 7. Additional three lives were lost in e-scooter incidents while one fatality involved a motorbike passenger.
