Covid-19 is making a comeback in India. Is it the slackening of discipline, the arrival of new variants, the fall in the population’s acquired immunity? In any case, India is seeing the number of new infections rise even faster than during the first wave, when it was close to 100,000 new cases per day.
Covid-19 in India, the virus back on the rise
The number of new daily cases has risen from 10,000 to 60,000 in a few weeks. The increase is greatest in the state of Maharashtra, where curfews have been declared. But everywhere recovery is looming and the country is trying to prepare for the worst.
Indeed, of the more than 60,000 cases detected on Saturday 27 March 2021, 40,000, or two-thirds, are in Maharashtra. Hospitals are filling up in the cities of Bombay, Pune and Nagpur. Since a curfew has been decreed in the whole state from 8 pm.
“Preparing for a lockdown again”.
Although the increase is less noticeable there for the moment, many Indian states are seeing a rise in cases, such as Gujarat, Punjab and Kerala. PCR tests are increasingly required to cross borders. Several states have imposed restrictions for the famous Holi festival. In total, India has 500,000 active cases of the Coronavirus. 60 million doses of vaccine have been administered in the country of over one billion people.
