Correspondence and Observations

Dear Sir,

It is incorrect to suggest that the nation’s collective intellect is confined solely to select groups such as NGOs, MEPs, TDs, university professors or journalists. The wider population, all five million of us, conceives views that can often be insightful and surprising. Precisely these groups are frequently accorded space for their personal commentary pieces.

Might not more diversity and egalitarianism appear within the letters chosen for publication? Perhaps we could omit letters from well-known contributors and those who receive substantial public funding? – Yours faithfully,
Richard Horgan,
Clonskeagh,
Dublin 6.

Dear Editor,
Numerous international news outlets permit their readers to engage in vigorous discourses, of course within certain restrictions. The New York Times, the Washington Post or even the London Times serve as case points. – Yours sincerely,
Ellen Oliver,
West Hartford,
Connecticut,
US.
