In the countdown to the Paris Olympics, sports reporters have delved into aspects of Irish Olympic history that were previously undiscovered. This series of podcasts offers a variety of these revelations, as narrated by the people who penned them.
In the fourth episode, Seán Moran narrates the tale of the multi-talented Fanahan McSweeney, a sprinter who Eamonn Coghlan regarded as ‘one of Ireland’s finest athletes in history’. Besides his athletic prowess, McSweeney was also an inventor, engineer, and musician. He rose to prominence during the Munich Olympic Games in 1972 when he identified a Palestinian extremist early on, who would eventually partake in the murder of 14 Israeli athletes.
