Warning residents and businesses to remain vigilant, Cork City Council has issued a notice about unusually high astronomical spring tides expected to last from Wednesday through to Sunday. The council has further cautioned a possible tidal surge and recommends that necessary precautions should be taken to safeguard properties from flooding, ahead of the high tides scheduled for Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.
In the imminent days, specific areas of the city are potentially at risk of flooding. Particularly susceptible to road ponding or flooding are the city’s low-lying areas coinciding with the incoming high tide timing for Wednesday’s evening, Thursday and Friday.
Expected to be affected by flooding are areas including Morrison’s Quay, Fr Mathew Quay, Union Quay, Trinity Bridge, South Terrace, Rutland Street, Sawmill Street, Crosses Green, Sharman Crawford St, Wandesford Quay and South Mall. Floods might also extend to the quays in the city centre of Cork.
The city council has committed to keep tabs on the weather conditions and will provide updated guidelines as the situation evolves. Citizens can stay updated through regularly posted tweets by the twitter handle @corkcitycouncil, and the Council’s Public Alert System, MapAlerter.
According to weather predictions by Met Éireann, there could be heavy rainfall in Cork on Wednesday night and Friday morning.
