“Coolock Warehouse May House Asylum Seekers”

In Coolock, Dublin, a proposal to accommodate international asylum applicants at a particular location has sparked a wave of protests over the past week, according to the Department of Integration. The old Crown Paints warehouse, a focus of daily demonstrations, witnessed a notable protest this Wednesday when people rode horses down Malahide Road, causing substantial traffic disruptions. Consequently, local guards had to set up road blocks and reroute the traffic to secure public safety.

The Department commented that the warehouse site, which has the capacity to house approximately 500 international asylum applicants, may be converted into suitable living units for families, couples, as well as single men and women. Detailed plans regarding the proposal will be made known once an experienced housing provider is finalised to manage accommodation along with security services.

While there has been community pushback against the proposal, with numerous residents lamenting to local Social Democrats MP Cian O’Callaghan about the inconvenience of road blocks brought by the protests, the MP stressed the necessity of providing the asylum applicants with proper shelter. He also emphasised the need for stronger engagement and support for local communities amidst the situation.

Aodhán Ó Ríordáin, a Labour MP for Dublin Bay North, acknowledged the protesters’ right to voice their opinions, but noted that blocking roads was not a constructive approach. He expressed concerns about the escalated situation with outsiders allegedly stirring things up and the demanding task of accommodating a large number of asylum applicants, but affirmed the community’s readiness to welcome and integrate the newcomers.

“We’re striving to grab the Government’s attention concerning difficulties present within our current community. Hopefully, they might finally be receptive to the local events,” he conveyed, whilst pointing out that the regions in Coolock are rather deprived.

A representative from Garda confirmed there haven’t yet been any arrests, nor have there been any incidents related to the demonstrations so far.

There’s another protest planned at the location this coming Sunday.
